Role Overview

CIFOR-ICRAF is seeking an experienced communications leader to serve as the Head of Global Outreach and Engagement. This position plays a strategic role in shaping the organization’s global communications presence and outreach impact. Working closely with senior leadership, donors, and partners, the role leads a diverse team responsible for media relations, events, digital presence, content production, and stakeholder engagement.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Coordination

  • Lead the global outreach and engagement component of the organization’s communication strategy.
  • Provide high-level communication support for public events, including messaging, speech writing, presentation development, and stakeholder coordination.
  • Oversee the execution of major events and ensure the organization’s visibility is maximized.

Media and Digital Engagement

  • Supervise the media relations team and develop impactful media strategies.
  • Manage the organization’s global social media strategy and its execution.
  • Oversee strategic email marketing campaigns and performance reporting.
  • Guide CIFOR-ICRAF’s film and photography program for storytelling and impact.

Content and Web Strategy

  • Lead the editorial strategy for CIFOR-ICRAF’s main websites and news platforms.
  • Supervise a team of editors and writers to ensure timely, high-quality content.

Budget and Team Management

  • Manage the Communications, Outreach and Engagement budget.
  • Ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of all communication activities.
  • Support and coordinate a multidisciplinary communications team across various functions.

Qualifications and Experience

Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in communications, international relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in a dynamic communication environment, preferably in international development, research, or science communication.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong writing and editorial skills, ideally with a background in journalism.
  • Proven track record managing diverse communication tools and platforms.
  • Experience in leading outreach activities, managing media relations, and organizing large-scale events.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce impactful digital and traditional content.
  • Understanding of impact measurement and campaign evaluation.
  • Previous experience working with research institutions or in the development sector is a plus.
  • Fluency in English required; additional languages such as French, Spanish, or Indonesian are an advantage.

Terms of Employment

  • This is a globally recruited position.
  • Initial appointment is for one year, with a six-month probationary period.
  • Contract extension is subject to performance and funding availability.
  • Remuneration is competitive and based on qualifications and experience.
  • Duty station: Nairobi, Kenya or Bogor, Indonesia.
